England player ratings from disappointing defeat to South Africa in opening T20

Jason Roy smashed a brilliant half-century but was unable to prevent England from slipping to a one-run defeat in a thrilling opening T20 against South Africa in East London.

Chasing South Africa’s 177-8, Roy scored a 22-ball fifty and captain Eoin Morgan made 52 from 34 balls as England appeared to be cruising to victory.

But, with England requiring seven to win off the final over, Lungi Ngidi restricted the tourists to just five as South Africa clinched a surprising win to go 1-0 up in the three-match series.

Got England’s chase off to the perfect start with a 22-ball half-century – only Morgan has scored a quicker fifty for England in this format.
